Narendra Modi declared victory in the national elections on Tuesday, though his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), faced unexpected setbacks. The election results fell short of Modi’s ambition to secure an unassailable majority, necessitating a coalition to form a government.
Modi declares win, faces coalition challenge!
Addressing supporters at his party headquarters in New Delhi, Modi celebrated the victory of his National Democratic Alliance (NDA). “Today is a glorious day… National Democratic Alliance is going to form the government for the third time, we are grateful to the people”, Modi announced. He hailed the win as a triumph for the world’s largest democracy.
Despite the celebratory tone, the results marked a significant blow to Modi’s BJP. The party secured 240 seats, falling short of the 272 required for an outright majority. With the NDA allies, the coalition holds 292 seats in total.
This outcome contrasts sharply with Modi’s confident predictions of a 400-seat supermajority and follows his previous electoral successes where the BJP won a simple majority on its own. The BJP’s reliance on coalition partners now highlights a diminished dominance, challenging Modi’s vision for aggressive economic reforms.
The opposition, led by Rahul Gandhi’s National Congress, framed the results as a public rejection of Modi’s leadership. “The country has unanimously and clearly stated that it does not want Modi and his party to run the country”, Gandhi said, reflecting on the shift in voter sentiment against Modi’s divisive politics.

Despite their inability to unseat Modi, the opposition’s performance has eroded the BJP’s stronghold, even capturing seats in the party’s traditional bases. The election results have also affected the stock market, with Indian stocks plunging on the same day, reflecting investor concerns over the political uncertainty and its implications for future economic policies.
