In recent news, Muhsin Hendricks, widely regarded as the world’s first openly gay imam, was shot dead last weekend near Gqeberha, South Africa.
According to local police, the imam was traveling in a vehicle with another individual when an unknown car blocked their exit. Two masked assailants emerged and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Authorities confirmed the authenticity of a circulating video depicting the targeted killing in Bethelsdorp, near Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth. The motive behind the murder remains unclear, and police have launched an investigation, urging the public to come forward with any relevant information.

Hendricks, a prominent LGBTQ+ rights advocate, came out as gay in 1996 and dedicated his life to creating inclusive spaces for queer Muslims. He founded the Al-Ghurbaah mosque in Wynberg, Cape Town, providing a safe environment for marginalized Muslims, including LGBTQ+ individuals and women.
