Air pollution in Pakistan has reached alarming levels, with Multan now ranked as the country’s most polluted city. The city recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of over 1,900, marking one of the highest levels in the world. Meanwhile, Peshawar’s AQI has also hit hazardous levels, reaching 509, as thick smog blankets the city and nearby areas.
In Punjab, Lahore’s Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) is stepping up efforts to combat rising pollution. Teams are working daily to wash trees and plants along major roads, including Mall Road and Ferozepur Road, aiming to reduce dust and pollutants. According to PHA Director General Muhammad Tahir Wattoo, they are also focusing on tree planting to help address smog levels.

A recent report from the Green Master Plan identifies rapid urban development, nearby industrial zones, and shrinking green spaces as major contributors to Lahore’s smog problem. This loss of greenery has turned Lahore into a “heat island.” Experts warn that if industries are not moved to designated areas, the pollution issue may become irreversible, posing serious health risks for residents.
