New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced heightened security measures for the upcoming T20 Cricket World Cup in June following reports of potential threats surrounding the event. While emphasizing the absence of “credible threats at this time,” Governor Hochul stresses the importance of taking precautions.
“In preparation for the Cricket World Cup, my team has been working with federal and local law enforcement to keep attendees safe”, Governor Hochul stated.
India vs Pakistan: Extra security for the big match
Concerns primarily stem from the highly anticipated India-Pakistan match, which is known for attracting a massive global audience. Authorities have been particularly vigilant since the New York City Police Department (NYPD) issued a bulletin highlighting potential security risks.
The NYPD bulletin, as reported by ABC News, cited “recent pro-ISIS propaganda,” which referenced the India-Pakistan match. This information, combined with previous threats received by the World Cup – including one linked to the Islamic State’s Khorasan chapter (IS-K) in April – prompted heightened security measures.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder confirmed the existence of earlier threats and the specific concerns surrounding the India-Pakistan match.
Governor Hochul announced increased enforcement presence, surveillance, and screening processes as part of the enhanced security measures. These proactive steps are designed to ensure the safety of all attendees throughout the tournament.
