Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus Takes Charge of Bangladesh’s Caretaker Government

Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus has been sworn in as the head of Bangladesh’s caretaker government. His appointment follows the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country after violent protests.

During the swearing-in ceremony on Thursday, Yunus, 84, pledged to uphold the constitution and carry out his duties with sincerity. His newly formed cabinet, which includes advisers instead of ministers, features key figures like Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud, leaders of the Students Against Discrimination group, and human rights activist Adilur Rahman Khan.

Yunus returned to Dhaka from Paris earlier that day and expressed optimism about Bangladesh’s future. He called the day a “new victory” for the nation, comparing it to a second independence. Yunus stressed the urgent need to restore law and order after weeks of violence that claimed over 455 lives.

Yunus was chosen by student protesters to lead the interim government, which is responsible for overseeing new elections. The military, which turned against Hasina over the weekend, supports his leadership, marking a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.
