North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered the execution of 30 government officials following devastating floods that killed approximately 4,000 people in the country’s northern region. According to TV Chosun, citing a South Korean government source, the officials were held responsible for failing to prevent the disaster and were shot last month.
The floods, which struck in late July, caused extensive damage in Jagang province, destroying over 4,100 homes, roads, and rail infrastructure. Additionally, around 3,000 hectares of farmland were ruined, further straining the nation’s food supply.
Key areas affected include the trade hub city of Sinuiju, located near the Chinese border, and the nearby county of Uiju. This catastrophic event has not only underscored North Korea’s vulnerability to natural disasters but also the regime’s harsh response to perceived administrative failures.

The executions signal the regime’s strict enforcement of accountability, regardless of the scale or uncontrollable nature of the disaster.
