A shocking incident has come to light in central Shanxi province, China, where a section of the iconic Great Wall has suffered severe damage at the hands of construction workers.

The whole story

Two individuals, a 38-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, have been detained on suspicion of attempting to create a shortcut for their construction project. The incident occurred at the 32nd Great Wall, where the duo used an excavator to dig through the ancient structure.

They widened an existing cavity in the wall to create a “big gap” to accommodate their machinery, all in an effort to reduce the distance they needed to travel. Local authorities have expressed grave concern over the ‘irreversible damage’ inflicted on the Ming Great Wall’s integrity and the safety of its cultural relics.
