Pakistan Discusses Starlink Partnership Amid Internet Challenges, Plans 5G Auction

Source: CNBC

Pakistan is actively negotiating with Starlink to bring its satellite internet services to the country, Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja revealed on Thursday during a Senate Standing Committee meeting on IT and Telecommunication.

The session, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan, focused on the country’s internet challenges and their impact on the IT sector. Khawaja stated, “We are in talks with Starlink to bring them to Pakistan,” while also announcing plans to auction the 5G spectrum in April 2024. This move aims to modernize Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and enhance connectivity.

Despite these promising steps, the minister acknowledged significant obstacles. She highlighted the lack of investment in the IT sector over the past three years, which has strained the country’s ability to meet growing internet demands.

The meeting also addressed concerns about unregulated VPN usage. Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General (retd) Hafeezur Rehman announced that VPN licensing would begin on January 1. This initiative aims to reduce data security risks and bring unmonitored services under regulation.

These developments reflect Pakistan’s commitment to improving its digital infrastructure, addressing connectivity issues, and preparing for a more tech-enabled future.
