Pakistan is facing the worst economic crisis in years, which has started affecting the country’s major sectors. Adding to the extreme conditions, earlier today, Pakistan experienced a severe power outage due to a grid failure leaving the whole country in shambles.
Pakistan without electricity
In the early hours of the morning at 7:30 am, on Monday, Pakistanis woke up without electricity after the national grid suffered a major breakdown. Reportedly, it was caused due to a large voltage surge in the south of the grid resulting in a massive blackout.
Speaking on the escalating situation, Power Minister Khurram Dastagir said, “The grid should be fully functioning by 10 pm. We are trying our utmost to achieve restoration before that – However, there’s an underlying weakness in the system which needs to be resolved.”

Update: Power restored in several areas
As per the latest media reports, electricity has been restored in several parts of the major cities – Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta and work is in progress for the rest.
With the financial situation of the country already on the edge, this is the second time in just three months that 220 million people were left without power due to a grid failure. It certainly poses a big question on the competence of the authorities and their strategy for Pakistan’s development going forward.
Hopefully, whatever it will be, it will be in Pakistan’s best interest.
