Pakistan Issues Visas To 37 British Journalists For The Coverage Of General Elections

In recent news, the High Commission of London has issued Pakistani visas to 37 British journalists including the reporters from ‘The Times’ and others alike. This step was taken for the coverage of the upcoming general elections in the country.

The government of Pakistan, along with the help of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is ready to ensure fair elections committed to the constitutional mandate. It must be noted that Pakistan’s election schedule has severely struggled in recent times due to the deteriorating economic and political conditions.

The Election Commission processed 174 requests for special cards allocated to foreign media personnel and their local staff. As per media reports, there were 25 requests from the UK, 8 from Russia, 13 from Japan, 2 from South Africa, and 5 from the Commonwealth as international observers.

Further, a group called EP Wing also confirmed that they received visa applications from 14 different countries for journalists who want to cover the election. A total of 81 journalists applied, but only 49 of them have been given visas so far with the others still in process.

Previously, a reporter from Christina Lamb was once deported for overriding international journalism policies. However, the decision not only facilitates media coverage but also signals the global attention and interest surrounding the democratic processes in the country.
