Pakistan has commenced building its largest nuclear power plant, the Chashma Nuclear Power Project Unit-5 (C-5), with a generation capacity of 1,200 MW. The construction officially began on December 30, 2024, with a ceremony for the first concrete pour.
High-ranking officials from both Pakistan and China attended the event, symbolizing the strong collaboration between the two nations.
The Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority granted the construction license for C-5 after the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission submitted its application in April 2024. Located at the Chashma Nuclear Power Generating Station (CNPGS) in Punjab, C-5 joins four operational plants: C-1 and C-2, each generating 325 MW, and C-3 and C-4, producing 340 MW each.
This project reflects Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to enhance its energy mix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. With Chinese technical and financial assistance, C-5 will significantly increase the country’s nuclear power capacity, which currently stands at 3,530 MW from six operational plants.
