Pakistan’s government has passed the 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill, bringing significant changes to the country’s judicial system. The amendment, also called the Constitutional Package, focuses on limiting the Supreme Court’s suo motu powers and setting a three-year term for the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP).
One of the key changes is the new process for appointing the CJP. Now, the prime minister can appoint the top judge from among the three most senior Supreme Court judges based on recommendations from a special parliamentary committee.
The amendment also introduces the formation of constitutional benches in the Supreme Court and high courts. It further restricts the judiciary’s power to take suo motu action, shifting some authority to the newly established parliamentary committees.

This amendment was passed with a two-thirds majority in both the Senate and the National Assembly, despite initial opposition from some political parties. The government aims to ensure transparency and balance within the judiciary through these reforms, which will take effect immediately.
