Pakistani Businessman Set on Fire in Canada, Hospitalized in Critical Condition

In a shocking incident in Surrey, British Columbia, a Pakistani-Canadian businessman, Rahat Rao, was set on fire and is now in critical condition. Rao, who has lived in the city for over 30 years, was attacked near his currency exchange business by an unidentified man.

According to local media, the assailant doused Rao with a fire accelerant before setting him on fire. Rao was rushed to the hospital with severe burns. His brother-in-law, Munir Riasat, confirmed Rao’s identity and his critical condition to CBC News.

The attacker fled the scene in a stolen car, which police later recovered. Authorities are still searching for the suspect.

Reports indicate that Rahat Rao had been active in protests following the death of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2022. Nijjar’s death had significant repercussions within Canada’s Sikh community, and the incident has drawn international attention.
