India has banned the release of the Pakistani blockbuster “The Legend of Maula Jatt,” starring Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan. The film was set to release in India’s Punjab on October 2, but officials in Delhi denied the necessary permission.
Distributor Nadeem Mandviwalla told the Press Trust of India (PTI) that a stay order was issued by an Indian court following a plea from a ministry. However, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry of India has not provided a specific reason for the decision.
This film, a remake of the 1979 Punjabi classic, is the highest-grossing Pakistani movie to date and tells the story of a folk hero battling the leader of a rival clan. It would have been the first Pakistani film screened in India in over a decade.
