A Pakistani man has been committed to a mental hospital after he submitted an application to establish the country’s first gay club. According to reports, the individual, whose name remains undisclosed, aimed to create a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community in Abbottabad. However, his efforts were met with severe backlash.
The man filed his application with the deputy commissioner (DC) of Abbottabad, proposing the creation of the ‘Lorenzo Gay Club.’ He emphasized that the club would serve as a valuable resource for homosexual, bisexual and some heterosexual individuals, providing a supportive environment while adhering to legal constraints, including prohibitions on gay sex.
Despite his careful wording to avoid illegal activities, gay sex remains illegal in Pakistan and can lead to imprisonment for up to two years. The conservative religious culture further complicates the situation for the LGBTQ+ community, who often face significant social stigma.
Before being admitted to a mental hospital in Peshawar, the man spoke to The Telegraph. He advocated for human rights and expressed his determination to fight for the neglected community’s rights. He stated his intention to seek a written response from officials if his petition was rejected and mentioned his willingness to take the matter to court.

The DC office has confirmed receipt and review of the application. However, the situation escalated when the application was leaked on social media, sparking outrage among local residents and politicians in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
