Pakistan’s First Free ‘Proton Therapy’ Cancer Hospital To Be Built In Karachi

In a promising development for cancer patients in Pakistan, a historic agreement was signed on Thursday at the Governor House in Karachi to establish the country’s first-ever free proton therapy-based cancer hospital.

Free cancer care with ‘Proton Therapy!’

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by the Governor of Sindh, Kamran Tessori; the Secretary General of JDC Foundation, Zafar Abbas (Sitara e Imtiaz); and US-based Pakistani businessman and philanthropist, Dr. Ali Sheikhani. This collaboration aims to provide comprehensive cancer care, from diagnosis to treatment, completely free of charge.

“This free cancer hospital, is to be named ‘JDC Shamim Sheikhani Free Cancer Hospital’. It will be the first of its kind in Pakistan and will utilize cutting-edge Proton therapy for various cancers”, Governor Tessori stated, pledging his unwavering assistance to the project.

Zafar Abbas emphasized the financial burden cancer care places on patients. Further highlighting the high cost of even basic diagnostics like mammograms for breast cancer. He stressed the critical need for such a facility, stating, “The proposed hospital will offer free services from the initial diagnosis to the final treatment, making it accessible to all who need it.”

The hospital is planned for the Numaish area. Negotiations are underway to secure 20 acres of land to accommodate a 400-bed facility. The complex will also provide accommodations for patients from remote areas of Sindh seeking treatment.

Dr. Ali Sheikhani, driven by the personal loss of his mother to cancer, expressed his commitment to the project. He confirmed that the hospital will be named after his mother and will be equipped with the latest technology, including Proton therapy.

The signing ceremony concluded with Captain Doctor Raza, representing JDC. And Imran Danish, the Managing Director of Allmed Solutions, officially signing the MOU. Governor Tessori, Zafar Abbas, and Dr. Ali Sheikhani were also present. This collaborative effort marks a significant step towards providing free, advanced cancer care to patients in Pakistan.
