Morocco was struck by a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake on a fateful Friday night, resulting in the tragic loss of nearly 820 lives and leaving 672 people injured. The aftermath of this natural disaster saw 205 individuals in critical condition, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The brutal affect

The earthquake’s impact was particularly brutal on buildings, causing some to crumble, and sending panic-stricken residents fleeing their homes in major cities. Tragically, the majority of casualties occurred in remote mountainous regions, posing challenges for rescue and relief efforts.

The epicenter of the quake lay closest to Marrakech, where significant damage was inflicted, including the collapse of several structures, including a UNESCO World Heritage site. Additionally, the region experienced disruptions in internet connectivity due to power outages, as reported by the global internet monitor NetBlocks.
