The Punjab Home Department has introduced a paid internship program for students studying psychology, criminology and law. This program provides practical experience within the correctional system across 44 jails in the province.

The program’s main goal is to actively engage students in the important process of rehabilitation and reintegration. Interns will have the opportunity to interact directly with inmates through dedicated sessions. This hands-on interaction allows students to apply their academic knowledge in a meaningful way, making a positive contribution to the lives of those incarcerated.

Furthermore, the program provides assistance to vulnerable groups in the prison system, such as women, children and the elderly. Interns will offer free legal aid, potentially reducing sentences for those lacking resources for proper legal representation.

The initiative was revealed during a meeting between Punjab Home Secretary Noor ul Amin Mengal and IG Prisons Mian Farooq Nazir. Mengal stressed the importance of the program, emphasizing its dual purpose: improving the correctional system and providing valuable experience for students.

Mengal elaborated on the benefits of the program, stating, “This program not only helps inmates with their rehabilitation but also provides a unique learning opportunity for the students involved.”

Interacting directly with inmates will help students gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced within the prison system. This real-world exposure will equip them with the skills to provide psychological support, comprehend the complexities of criminology, and offer legal assistance when necessary.
