Rare ‘Doomsday Fish’ Reappears on California Shores, Raising Questions

Source: CNN

For the third time in 2024, the rare deep-sea Oarfish, often referred to as the “Doomsday Fish,” has washed ashore in Southern California. This time, the 10-foot-long creature was discovered on the coast just months after another similar fish was found in La Jolla, sparking renewed intrigue and superstitions.

The Oarfish is a deep-sea species rarely seen by humans, and its appearances have long been associated with ominous myths. Some believe it serves as a warning for natural disasters, referencing reports of multiple Oarfish sightings before Japan’s devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The discovery was confirmed by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, which announced the news with a hint of humor, saying,“Just when you thought the Doomsday hype was over.” The fish has been transferred to the Southwest Fisheries Science Center for research.

Scientists, led by Ben Frable of Scripps Oceanography, plan to study the fish’s biology, anatomy, and genetics. While the myths persist, experts suggest the sightings likely indicate illness or disorientation in these deep-sea creatures.

This marks the 21st recorded sighting of an Oarfish on California’s coast since 1901, fueling both scientific curiosity and folklore.
