Russia has warned the United States and its allies of the risk of World War III. It further cautioned that any escalation in Ukraine could extend beyond Europe.
This warning comes after Ukraine’s recent attack on Russia’s Kursk region. It is the largest foreign strike on Russian soil since World War II. In response, President Vladimir Putin promised a strong reaction.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the West of escalating the conflict by considering Ukrainian requests to lift restrictions on using Western-supplied weapons. Lavrov warned that the United States and its allies were “playing with fire,” likening them to children handling matches.
Lavrov emphasized that the notion of World War III being confined to Europe is dangerous and underscored that Russia is “clarifying” its nuclear doctrine. This doctrine allows the use of nuclear weapons if Russia’s existence is threatened.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for bolder support from Western allies, citing restrictions on weapon use. Russia, meanwhile, has accused the West, particularly the U.S. and Britain, of being indirectly involved in the Kursk attack by providing intelligence and other support to Ukraine.
