Saudi Crown Prince Calls for Ceasefire and Palestinian State at Regional Summit

Source: RFI

At a summit in Riyadh on Monday, Saudi Arabia called for immediate ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon, urging the global community to halt Israeli military actions. Gathering leaders from the Arab League and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the summit centered on support for a Palestinian state and regional stability.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman opened the summit, condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocide” and reaffirming support for Palestinians and Lebanese civilians facing “disastrous humanitarian consequences.” He stressed that the ceasefire would aid those in conflict-affected areas.

A draft resolution presented at the summit emphasizes “firm support” for Palestinian national rights, with a focus on establishing an independent, sovereign Palestinian state. This summit, occurring one year into the Israel-Hamas conflict, comes as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump prepares for his second term, a key point for many leaders. Trump’s previous actions, including recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, have intensified regional tensions.

Regional experts suggest the summit serves as a message to the new U.S. administration to engage in dialogue and de-escalation. The summit also highlights Saudi Arabia’s insistence on peace and stability before considering formal diplomatic ties with Israel.
