A Saudi tourist demonstrated extraordinary bravery by swimming for over five hours to find help for his stranded wife after their jet ski capsized in Pattaya Bay, Thailand, local authorities reported on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening when Abdulrahman Mahdi M. Al-Amri and his wife, Atheer Saeed A. Al-Amri, went missing around 6:30 p.m. A jet ski operator raised the alarm, prompting an immediate search and rescue operation led by Pattaya City Sea Rescue.

Despite dark seas, strong winds, and drizzle, the search team spent hours with no sign of the couple. Finally, authorities spotted Abdulrahman swimming toward Jomtien Beach, exhausted but determined to save his wife. Using lights from the shore as a guide, he made the perilous swim while battling fatigue.

Rescuers then located Atheer at 2 a.m., six hours after the search began. Though she had a minor leg injury, both were otherwise unharmed. Their jet ski had capsized and suffered engine damage due to seawater. After running out of fuel, Abdulrahman decided to swim to shore for help.

The couple later returned to Saudi Arabia after resolving a 50,000 Thai baht ($1,400) damage fee with the jet ski operator.

Since the normalization of diplomatic ties in 2022, Thailand has seen a surge in Saudi tourists.
