In a recent turn of events, Senator Bahramand Khan Tangi has withdrawn his resolution to ban social media platforms in Pakistan. Earlier in the week, the senator had proposed banning Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, X and YouTube across the country, citing their “negative and devastating effects” on the younger generation.
No ban on social media in Pakistan
On Tuesday, the resolution faced near-unanimous disapproval and protest, leading to its withdrawal. As per the sources, the senator in question was also expelled by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) last month for remaining silent in a Senate session.
The PPP had canceled his membership but did not file a reference against him or ask him to resign. Despite this, Tangi still holds the status of a PPP senator in the Senate secretariat’s record.
