Renowned Saudi scholar Sheikh Assim Al-Hakeem has issued a fatwa stating that Muslims with citizenship in Islamic countries cannot acquire citizenship in non-Muslim nations. His statement has sparked widespread debate among Muslims living abroad.
Responding to a query on the social media platform ‘X,’ Sheikh Al-Hakeem said, “A Muslim is not allowed to take the citizenship of a kafir country when he already is a citizen of a Muslim country and has a Muslim passport.”
The ruling has raised concerns, especially among Muslims from countries like Pakistan, who often migrate to non-Muslim nations for better opportunities. Many rely on these opportunities to escape poverty and support their families.
The fatwa has sparked criticism on social media. Some questioned its relevance, pointing out that many Muslims face hardships in their home countries. One user commented, “I’ve lived in an Arab country for 42 years but never received citizenship.”
