In recent news, a team of 22 Pakistani American Law Enforcement Society (PALES) officers, currently serving with the New York Police Department (NYPD), met with Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and offered their expertise to combat street crimes in Karachi.
As per media reports, the PALES team, led by Rohail Khalid, wants to share their knowledge and train Sindh police in critical areas like tackling street crime, intelligence gathering, and traffic management. Their diverse backgrounds – from Integrity Control to Patrol units – offer a wealth of experience to Karachi’s police force.
Safer streets: Less crime!
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah acknowledged the ongoing struggle against street crime. He highlighted the sacrifices made by police and Rangers in combating terrorism, which he linked to regional instability.
While praising successful anti-terrorism operations, Shah emphasized further refining street crime strategies. This includes utilizing technology, something the government is actively pursuing through legal reforms.
The PALES delegation echoed this sentiment. They believe a strong surveillance network can deter crime by making criminals feel constantly watched. This, coupled with effective technology use, forms the core of their proposed training programs.

CM Murad Ali Shah, impressed by the offer, directed the Inspector General of Police to explore the PALES proposal. Sending officers to New York for training is a possibility on the table.
Meanwhile, a productive meeting occurred at the Central Police Office (CPO) in Karachi. IG Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon showcased the advancements made by Sindh Police in using technology – like geo-fencing and tracking systems – to combat criminals. This resonated with the PALES delegation, who highlighted similar approaches used by the NYPD in tackling crime in major cities.
President PALES even designated specific points of contact within both departments to facilitate ongoing cooperation. The exchange of badges and souvenirs symbolized a new chapter in the fight against crime – one where Karachi and New York stand together, sharing knowledge and resources to protect their citizens.
