The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to overhaul the national cricket team in a major operation dubbed “Clean Up.” Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has consulted with board officials, former players, and associates to address concerns regarding team performance and internal politics.
The plan, expected to take effect after the T20 World Cup 2024, will see the removal of underperforming players and those fostering internal divisions. Sources report that at least six players are on the chopping block, with some rumored to be retained solely due to their relationship with the captain, Babar Azam.
Babar Azam’s leadership has come under scrutiny, with questions raised about his decision-making and ability to manage player discontent. Notably, several top players, including Azam, share the same management company. Former official Zaka Ashraf’s attempt to limit agent influence ultimately led to his resignation, raising concerns about potential manipulation in the current situation.
While Chairman Naqvi plans a press conference, the extent of his disclosures remains unclear. Advisors recommend he avoids naming specific players. Additionally, rising factionalism within the PCB will be addressed, and major departmental changes are expected.
