Social media users have launched a coordinated effort called “Operation Blockout” to hold celebrities and influencers accountable for their silence on the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The campaign encourages users to mass block public figures who haven’t used their platforms to highlight the humanitarian crisis and advocate for a ceasefire.
Speak Up or Get Blocked!
Frustrated users are expressing their discontent with celebrities perceived as prioritizing self-promotion over social justice issues. One TikTok user stated, “These people have opportunities to make change but instead use their platforms for personal gain. That’s it. Time to block them.”
The campaign gained momentum following the Met Gala, where many celebrities faced criticism for attending and seemingly disregarding the ongoing violence. This sentiment intensified after a video posted by a popular TikToker, referencing “let them eat cake” during the crisis, was seen as insensitive.
Users likened the response to a “digital guillotine,” highlighting the power dynamics between celebrities and their social media audience.

The movement argues that celebrities rely on public attention for influence. Platforms like TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) are abuzz with comments like, “They live off of our attention” and “Block them if they don’t use their voices.” The campaign underscores the expectation of accountability from figures who often leverage large followings.
The pressure appears to be working, with some celebrities responding by addressing the conflict. Chris Olsen and Lizzo acknowledged families affected by the situation on social media shortly after the #blockout2024 hashtag went viral.
Additionally, celebrities like Bella Hadid, Mark Ruffalo, Jenna Ortega, Kehlani, David Schwimmer, and Angelina Jolie actively used their platforms to raise awareness long before this movement happened. Following is the list of celebrities who are not speaking up for Palestine.
