Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of the globally acclaimed Netflix series Squid Game, recently revealed the toll that producing the show took on him, admitting he lost “eight or nine” teeth due to the intense stress of filming. The South Korean thriller, which gained worldwide popularity after its 2021 debut, follows contestants in high-stakes children’s games for a chance at life-changing wealth, reflecting societal themes that resonated with viewers globally.

In an interview with the BBC, Hwang shared that despite the massive success of Squid Game, he didn’t make much financially from the first season. He noted that the earnings potential of a second season persuaded him to return, adding that the story wasn’t entirely complete.

Hwang faces the task of creating new characters and inventive challenges, as most original characters did not survive the first season. Actor Lee Jung-jae will reprise his role as Gi-hun, returning to dismantle the deadly games and protect new players. Season two is set to answer lingering questions about the game’s origins and its mysterious overseer, the Front Man, and will premiere on Netflix on December 26, 2024.
