Turkey has reportedly denied Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s aircraft permission to enter its airspace, effectively preventing his attendance at the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan. The decision comes amid escalating tensions between the two nations.
Herzog’s office announced on Saturday that his trip had been canceled due to “security considerations” but did not provide further details. However, reports from Azerbaijani officials, cited by Ynet, revealed that the cancellation stemmed from Turkey’s refusal to allow Herzog’s plane to cross its airspace.
Despite days of intense negotiations through diplomatic channels, no resolution was reached. While the Israeli delegation to the summit successfully traveled to Baku via commercial flights through Georgia, Herzog was unable to attend.
The incident follows Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s recent declaration that Turkey has severed all ties with Israel. Erdogan stated,“The government of the Republic of Turkey, under my leadership, will not continue or develop relations with Israel.”
