A Turkish Airlines pilot tragically died mid-flight, prompting an emergency landing in New York, the airline confirmed on Wednesday. The incident occurred during flight TK204, which took off from Seattle on Tuesday evening, bound for Istanbul.
According to a statement by Turkish Airlines spokesperson Yahya Ustun, the pilot of the Airbus A350 collapsed during the flight. The flight crew immediately attempted first aid, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
The other pilot and co-pilot onboard made the swift decision to divert the plane and make an emergency landing in New York. Despite their efforts, the 59-year-old pilot passed away before the aircraft could land.
Ustun further disclosed that the pilot, who had been with Turkish Airlines since 2007, had recently undergone a routine medical examination in March, which showed no signs of any health concerns. The cause of the pilot’s sudden death remains unclear.
