Taking inspiration from a practice in Russia, Turkish farmer Izzet Koçak has employed an innovative method to enhance milk yields in his cattle. Koçak, who established a cattle business in the central Turkish province of Aksaray in 2018, has recently fitted virtual reality (VR) headsets on two of his cows, transporting them to virtual evergreen pastures.
An ‘unusual’ experiment
In his pursuit to increase milk production from his herd of 180 cattle, Koçak initially experimented with playing classical music, a technique employed by some breeders to create a soothing environment for the animals. Encouraged by the positive results, he decided to take it a step further by introducing VR technology.
The virtual reality headsets aim to provide a simulated natural environment for the cows, immersing them in visuals of lush green pastures. The calming effect of such virtual landscapes is believed to reduce stress and anxiety in the animals, potentially leading to increased milk yields.

Koçak’s unconventional approach demonstrates innovative thinking and willingness to explore new methods in the agricultural industry. As he continues his experiment with VR technology, it will be interesting to observe the long-term effects on his cows’ milk production and the potential implications for the wider farming community.
