Two Japanese climbers, Kazuya Hiraide and Kenro Nakajima, have fallen from K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, located in northern Pakistan. The climbers, both affiliated with Tokyo-based Ishii Sports, are renowned alpinists in their 30s and 40s.
The incident occurred at approximately 7,000 meters during their ascent of K2’s western cliff. An aerial search has located the climbers, but their condition is still unknown. Efforts to rescue them have been complicated by the high altitude and steep slope, making helicopter landings difficult. Ground rescue teams are currently attempting to reach them.
The Japanese Embassy in Islamabad is coordinating with local authorities and providing necessary support. This follows previous incidents involving Japanese climbers in Pakistan’s high-altitude regions.

Hiraide and Nakajima are distinguished recipients of the Piolets d’Or award, which recognizes their exceptional mountaineering skills.
