The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken a significant step by imposing a temporary ban on the import of frozen meat from Pakistan via sea routes.
‘No more Karachi meat’
The decision came in response to a concerning incident where a shipment of meat from a Karachi-based company was found to be contaminated with fungus. As a result, UAE authorities promptly disposed of the entire consignment and decided to halt all further imports of frozen meat from Pakistan through maritime channels until at least October 10.
This move, although temporary, highlights the UAE’s commitment to maintaining stringent quality control measures for imported food products. The ban, however, does not extend to meat exports by air, ensuring that the flow of this essential commodity remains uninterrupted.

Pakistan is a significant meat supplier to the UAE, with annual exports worth approximately $144 million. This incident underscores the need for both countries to work collaboratively to address quality control issues and ensure the safety of food imports, ultimately benefiting consumers in the UAE and maintaining a vital trade relationship between the two nations.
