UAE Completes Arab World’s First Nuclear Power Plant

Source: Business Recorder

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has achieved a major milestone with the completion of the Arab world’s first nuclear power plant. On Thursday, the UAE announced that Abu Dhabi’s Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant is now fully operational, with its fourth and final reactor entering commercial service.

The Barakah plant, developed by the state-owned Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), is set to produce 40 terawatt-hours of electricity annually. This output will meet 25 percent of the UAE’s electricity needs, a significant contribution in a region heavily reliant on air-conditioning. To put this in perspective, the plant’s annual production is nearly equivalent to New Zealand’s total electricity consumption.

The plant will support major industries, including Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Emirates Steel, and Emirates Global Aluminium. Emirati President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan praised the completion of Barakah as a “significant step on the journey towards net zero,” marking a key development in the UAE’s energy strategy.
