UK Bans Junk Food Ads Before 9 PM to Combat Obesity Crisis

Source: The Grocer

The United Kingdom has taken a significant step in the fight against childhood obesity by banning junk food advertising on television before 9 PM. This new regulation, which comes into effect on October 1, 2025, aims to protect children from the influence of unhealthy food and drink ads. Health Minister Andrew Gwynne confirmed the decision, emphasizing that early exposure to such marketing can heavily impact children’s dietary choices.

In addition to the TV ban, the government will also enforce a complete ban on paid-for online junk food advertisements. Research has shown that limiting exposure to these ads can help shape healthier eating habits. With one in five children in England already struggling with obesity by the time they start school, this initiative addresses a growing public health crisis and aims to reduce the burden on the National Health Service (NHS).

By restricting access to harmful marketing, the government hopes to encourage healthier lifestyles for the nation’s youth. This move is seen as a crucial effort to shift the country’s health trajectory and create a healthier future for the next generation.
