US lawmakers, former officials, and Amnesty International have called for the immediate release of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and an end to the reported use of excessive force against protesters.
Richard Grenell, former Director of National Intelligence under the Trump administration, took to Twitter, demanding, “Release Imran Khan,” alongside a Bloomberg report on the escalating situation in Islamabad. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad also condemned the reported shoot-on-sight orders, describing them as “a catastrophic mistake” and urging reconciliation.
US Congress members have intensified their criticism of Pakistan’s political environment. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib condemned the suppression of protests, describing it as an “attack on democracy and human rights,” while Representative Barbara Lee emphasized that freedom of speech and peaceful protest are essential to democracy worldwide.
Other lawmakers, including Congressman Ro Khanna, expressed concerns about internet shutdowns and roadblocks, while Summer Lee praised the bravery of Pakistani protesters fighting for electoral fairness. Congressman Brad Sherman highlighted broader human rights issues, including forced disappearances and sectarian violence.
