Pakistan has boldly declared an “Education Emergency” in a bid to tackle the staggering issue of 26 million children being out of school. This ambitious move by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif aims to not only get these kids back in classrooms but also propel Pakistan into becoming “one of the most educated societies in the world.”
26 million kids: Back to school?
PM Shehbaz Sharif calls it “a very challenging task” but draws inspiration from nations like Germany and Japan, who rose from the ashes of defeat. He emphasizes that “the real challenge is the will to do,” referencing Pakistan’s past triumphs in nuclear power and fighting terrorism.
The Prime Minister highlighted successful initiatives from his time as Punjab’s Chief Minister, like scholarship programs and “rescuing boys from brick kilns.” He emphasizes the need for collaboration with provinces, stating, “This is about our children and our future… We will march in unison.”

The situation is undeniably alarming. Education Minister Siddiqui calls the statistics “disturbing,” and UNICEF reports over 70% of 10-year-olds in Pakistan cannot read. International figures like the World Bank and UNICEF representatives all offered support, stressing the importance of factors like food security, inclusivity, and teacher accountability.
