Brazil’s Supreme Court banned X, formerly known as Twitter after the platform failed to meet a critical deadline for appointing a new legal representative in the country.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes has ordered the immediate suspension of the platform until it complies with court orders and pays existing fines.
Additionally, the court has imposed a hefty fine of nearly $9,000 per day on any Brazilian users or companies that attempt to access X using a VPN.
This decision follows the platform’s refusal to block accounts accused of spreading disinformation, many of which are linked to supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Brazil’s telecommunications agency is enforcing the ban, and tech giants like Apple and Google have been given five days to remove X from their app stores. The ban will remain in effect until X complies with the legal requirements set by the Brazilian authorities.
