A Chinese man, identified as Hong, reportedly squandered his family’s $550,000 savings on a livestreamer, driven by a peculiar desire to hear her refer to him as “bro.”
The incident, detailed by the South China Morning Post, revealed that Hong became obsessed with the unnamed influencer and went to extreme lengths to fund his generous donations. Beyond exhausting the family’s savings, he also resorted to stealing copper from his family’s hardware business and selling it to recycling centers for additional funds.
Hong confessed to sending approximately $550,000 to the streamer over time, prompting his arrest after the missing materials were traced back to him. Authorities have yet to disclose the streamer’s identity as the investigation continues.

“I didn’t want to meet her,” Hong stated during questioning. “I just wanted to hear her call me ‘bro.'”
