In a move that has taken many by surprise, Asif Ali Zardari, the 14th President of Pakistan, has announced his resignation as President of the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarian (PPPP).

Zardari informed the Election Commission Pakistan (ECP) of his decision on Thursday, according to reports from local media.

Asif Ali Zardari, who took office in March, had secured his presidency after defeating Mahmood Khan Achakzai, a seasoned politician from Balochistan and a candidate backed by the opposition Sunni Ittehad Council.
