Australia is set to introduce a social media ban for children, with a proposed minimum age limit of up to 16 years, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Tuesday. The upcoming legislation aims to reduce screen time for young people and encourage more outdoor activities, such as sports and social interactions. The law is expected to be introduced by the end of the year.

While the exact age limit for platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok is still under discussion, it is likely to fall between 14 and 16 years. A trial for age verification will be conducted in the coming months to finalize the policy.

Albanese referred to the growing influence of social media on youth as a “scourge” and stressed the importance of children engaging in real-world experiences. “I want to see kids off their devices and onto the footy fields, swimming pools, and tennis courts,” he said in an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
