Bangladesh’s Hasina Did Not Resign Before Fleeing, Son Clarifies

Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh’s long-time Prime Minister, did not officially resign before fleeing to India this week amid anti-government protests, her son Sajeeb Wazed has confirmed.

Wazed, speaking from Washington, explained that while Hasina planned to resign, she was unable to do so as the protesters approached her residence. Since Monday, Hasina has been in New Delhi after an uprising that resulted in around 300 deaths, mostly students, ending her 15-year leadership.

Wazed said the President dissolved Parliament, and discussions for a caretaker government began, but Hasina did not formally resign due to the sudden escalation of the protests. He also mentioned that the creation of a caretaker government without Hasina’s resignation could face legal challenges.

Despite the situation, Wazed expressed confidence that the Awami League, Hasina’s party, would participate in the upcoming elections, expected within three months. He welcomed a recent statement from opposition leader Khaleda Zia, who called for a united approach to ensure a fair and peaceful democratic process in Bangladesh.
