Despite facing delays due to US sanctions on Iran, the agreement highlights the importance of Chabahar in boosting regional trade connectivity.

The $370 million deal involves investments from India Ports Global Limited (IPGL) and additional financing of $250 million. It aims to solidify trade links between India and Iran, with Chabahar playing a central role in regional transit development.

Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has expressed confidence in the agreement, stating that it will lead to increased investments in the port and strengthen the bilateral cooperation between India and Iran. However, the deal has drawn implicit warnings of sanctions from the United States, India’s key strategic partner.

The US State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel cautioned entities engaging in business with Iran, emphasizing the potential risks of sanctions. This development underscores the delicate balance India must navigate between its economic interests and its alliance with the US.
