Tech mogul Elon Musk has sparked controversy by threatening to ban Apple devices from his companies, including Tesla and SpaceX if they proceed with a new partnership with artificial intelligence (AI) developer OpenAI.

Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI in 2015, expressed concerns about potential security risks if Apple integrates OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology directly into its operating systems. He went as far as suggesting that employees would have to surrender their Apple devices at the door and store them in Faraday cages – enclosures that block communication signals.

This comes just hours after Apple announced the partnership at its developer conference, aiming to leverage AI for a smarter Siri assistant and more personalized user experience. The move appears fueled by Musk’s strained relationship with OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. He is currently suing them for alleged breaches of the company’s founding principles.

However, experts caution that Musk’s threat may be difficult to enforce. Many of his companies – with employees likely using Android devices with built-in AI features or Microsoft products with integrated AI – may face limitations with such a ban.

Apple, on the other hand, is said to have a more privacy-focused approach, processing data primarily on devices and only sending it to OpenAI with user consent. While Musk’s motives remain questionable, Apple’s partnership with OpenAI could be a significant move to close the gap with competitors like Google and Microsoft in the rapidly evolving field of AI.
