On Saturday, thousands of people took to the streets in cities worldwide, calling for an end to the ongoing violence in Gaza and the broader Middle East as the war marked its first year. About 40,000 demonstrators marched through London, while protests also occurred in Paris, Rome, New York City, Manila, Cape Town, and Jakarta.

In Washington, demonstrators gathered near the White House, protesting U.S. support for Israel. New York’s Times Square saw protesters chanting in solidarity with Gaza and Lebanon, demanding an arms embargo against Israel.

The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing over 1,200 people. In response, Israel launched a military assault on Gaza, which, according to Gaza’s health ministry, has killed nearly 42,000 Palestinians and displaced millions.

In Rome, 6,000 demonstrators defied a protest ban, leading to police using tear gas and water cannons. Protests in Berlin included chants of “One Year of Genocide” and criticisms of police actions against pro-Palestinian demonstrators. More protests are expected to continue on Sunday.
