In a historic first, women have joined the annual ceremony to replace the Kiswa, the holy covering of the Kaaba, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. This marks a significant step towards gender inclusion at Islam’s holiest site.

Female employees from the General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque played a role in the sacred tradition. Alongside 159 skilled craftsmen, these women participated in the meticulous process of replacing the Kiswa.

The Kiswa, a black cloth adorned with intricate gold and silver embroidery, is replaced annually in a grand ceremony. The new Kiswa consists of 16 pieces forming the belt and seven pieces below it, which were ceremonially draped over the Kaaba.
