Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese organization representing survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The group, also known as Hibakusha, was recognized for its tireless efforts to promote a nuclear-free world and raise awareness about the dangers of nuclear weapons.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee honored the Hibakusha for sharing their personal experiences of the devastation caused by nuclear weapons. “Hibakusha help us understand the unimaginable pain and suffering caused by nuclear weapons and remind us why they must never be used again,” the committee noted.

Joergen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Nobel Committee, warned that modern nuclear weapons have far more destructive power than those used in World War II. He stressed that a nuclear conflict could kill millions and trigger catastrophic climate consequences.
