Soul Sisters’ Founder Kanwal Ahmed Launches ‘Hey Soulies’ Community After Facebook Deletes Group

Soul Sisters Pakistan, a community founded by Kanwal Ahmed in 2013, serves as a sanctuary for Pakistani women. It allows them to openly discuss taboo topics and navigate the challenges prevalent in their society.

However, the group faced a sudden setback recently when Facebook temporarily deleted it, citing an unspecified “intellectual property violation”. This move left over 300,000 members in dismay, as the platform had been a lifeline for many women in Pakistan.

From “Soul Sisters” to “Hey Soulies”

Kanwal Ahmed, a women’s rights activist and entrepreneur, swiftly responded by announcing the creation of a new community named “Hey Soulies” on Beehiiv, in an effort to safeguard against future social media censorship. The new platform aims to provide a safe haven where women can freely express themselves without fear of arbitrary deletion.

The significance of Soul Sisters Pakistan lies in its role as more than just a virtual space. It’s a haven where women find solace, exchange invaluable advice, and support each other through difficult times. From discussions on sex education to navigating divorce and domestic violence, the group tackles issues that are often stigmatized or ignored in Pakistani society.

Despite being recognized as a community leader by Facebook in 2018, Ahmed faced the harsh reality of platform vulnerability. The emergence of Hey Soulies represents defiance against social media giants’ opaque policies. It is a commitment to creating a digital sanctuary where women’s voices are not only heard but cherished.

As Ahmed aptly puts it, “The time to build a zone free from the shady policies of social media companies is NOW.” It’s a testament to the resilience and determination of Pakistani women to carve out spaces where they can thrive, uplift and support each other unapologetically.
