Karachi Central Jail Holds First-Ever Convocation For Inmates

In a historic event, the Central Prison Karachi hosted its first-ever convocation for inmates who completed various vocational courses. Organized in collaboration with the Alkhidmat Foundation (AKF), the ceremony celebrated the achievements of 248 inmates, including both under-trial and convicted prisoners.

They received certificates for courses in graphic design, computer and information technology (CIT), and foreign languages such as English and Chinese.

Sindh Minister for Prisons Ali Hassan Zardari, the chief guest, awarded shields and certificates to the top 12 position holders, each receiving a cash prize of Rs.25,000. Certificates were also given to inmate teachers in recognition of their contributions.

Minister Zardari commended the prison administration and emphasized unity within the prison system. He announced plans to replicate similar programs in other prisons across Sindh, address overcrowding by reviving the Thatta prison and expanding Malir prison, and shift prisons to solar power.

Inmates shared their joy and aspirations. Muhammad Nauman, an under-trial inmate who excelled in the Chinese language course, and Yousuf, serving a life sentence with four diplomas, described the event as “a dream come true.”
