An official’s disclosure to a parliamentary panel on Wednesday has raised concerns about the electric supply situation in Karachi, Pakistan’s economic hub.

The official warned that if the federal government fails to provide subsidies to K-Electric (KE), a private company responsible for supplying power to Karachi, the city may face the grim possibility of an electricity shutdown. “The federal government provides a subsidy of Rs.10 to Rs.20/unit to K-Electric to maintain the tariff differential”, told the power secretary.
